What galvanized pipe is

Galvanized pipe is steel pipe coated with zinc to slow rust. It was a standard water supply pipe for decades and was commonly installed in homes built before 1960. (Source: City of Cape May, N.J., galvanized pipe guide, 2024) In Tampa Bay, that includes many homes in older city neighborhoods and early postwar subdivisions, as well as later homes where a builder or remodeler used it for some runs.

The zinc coating wears away over time. Once it does, the steel corrodes from the inside, and minerals build up on the rough surface. A 2024 homeowner guide from the City of Cape May, New Jersey, water department puts the life of galvanized pipe at 40 to 100 years and says pipes from the 1960s or earlier are likely near the end of their useful life. Signs your galvanized pipe is failing

  • Low water pressure, often worse at upstairs fixtures or the shower
  • Pressure that is fine at some taps and weak at others
  • Brown or rusty water, especially first thing in the morning
  • Brown stains in sinks, tubs or toilets
  • Leaks at threaded joints, where the pipe wall is thinnest
  • Gray metal pipe with threaded fittings where the water line enters the house

Corrosion inside galvanized pipe is not something you can flush out. The buildup narrows the pipe, so pressure keeps dropping, and eventually the steel rusts through.

Health and water quality

Older galvanized coatings could contain small amounts of lead, and corroded galvanized pipe that was ever downstream of lead plumbing can collect lead in its scale. (Source: City of Cape May, N.J., galvanized pipe guide, 2024) If you are concerned, ask your water utility about lead testing. Replacing galvanized pipe removes the rust and scale problem completely.

Replacing galvanized pipe

Because the corrosion runs through the whole system, replacing only the leaking section rarely lasts. Most homes with failing galvanized pipe are repiped with PEX or copper. A licensed contractor replaces the main and branch lines, adds new shutoff valves, pulls the permit and schedules the inspection.

Older homes can bring surprises: framing notched by earlier work, plaster walls instead of drywall, crawlspaces or a mix of galvanized and copper from past repairs. Ask your contractor how they will handle plaster, where they plan to open walls and what happens if they find damage.

  • Ask whether the line from the meter to the house is galvanized too, and whether the quote replaces it
  • Ask how they will connect to any copper or plastic sections that stay
  • Get the patching plan in writing, especially for plaster walls

Cost

Angi's Tampa guide puts typical repipe costs at $1,514 to $15,135, with most homeowners around $7,568. (Source: Angi, Tampa repipe cost guide, updated May 27, 2026) Older homes with plaster, crawlspaces or two stories can land toward the higher end. See what drives repiping costs.

Insurance

Florida insurers may consider the age and type of plumbing when writing or renewing a policy, and four-point inspections note the supply pipe material. (Source: NBC 6 South Florida, March 13, 2023) If your insurer has asked about galvanized pipe, see repiping for insurance.

Common questions

Can galvanized pipe be cleaned out?

No practical method removes the internal corrosion. Replacement is the long-term fix.

My water pressure is low. Is it the pipe?

It might be. A pressure regulator, a partly closed valve or a clogged aerator can also cause it. A plumber can test pressure at the meter and at fixtures.

Do I have to replace everything at once?

Many homeowners do, because the same age of pipe runs through the house. Some replace in phases. Ask for both prices.
